Education

Education

This area is of fundamental importance to GEM’s recruitment strategy, succession planning, business sustainability and future growth. GEM is commitment to facilitating skills-development, access to industry knowledge, and relevant training that allows its workforce to become exemplar and highly effective in their roles.

How do we achieve this?

GEM has developed a portfolio of education-based programmes. The selection within the portfolio of programmes provides accessibility for all demographics. Programmes include:

Work Experience

We liaise with local schools across different London boroughs and provide 1-week work experience schedules during which young people are taught the fundamental principles and purposes of a functioning business: finance, purchasing, stock rotation and customer service. Once they’ve completed a health and safety induction they are assigned a mentor who takes them across multiple different sites within London that provide a real flavour of the work a typical GEM engineer would come across on a daily basis. This experience provides young people with a true sense of the world of work.

Traineeship

As part of our pre-apprenticeship recruitment strategy we host a 4-week paid traineeship at our Camden site. Beneficiaries are introduced to the world of work, specifically in the building services sector. During the 4-week schedule beneficiaries are introduced to water hygiene, gas boiler maintenance, heating elements, and electrical controls. Beneficiaries also complete a Level 1 Health and Safety in the

Construction Industry qualification and a Customer Service Level 1 qualification. At the end of the traineeship all beneficiaries are guaranteed an interview for the Apprenticeship programme. Those who are successful progress to our 4-year Apprenticeship programme, those who are unsuccessful on that occasion have gained meaningful, relevant and valuable experience from the traineeship programme as well as paid employment and two valid and relevant qualifications which allows them to apply for a Green CSCS Labourers card and enter the Labourers market, opening up further employment opportunities.

Apprenticeships

GEM has had wonderful success with its apprenticeships in recent years, producing 7 high-quality, professional engineers. Since January 2019 GEM has invested in a 4-year Service and Maintenance Engineer (Planned and Reactive Maintenance Engineer) apprenticeship, aimed at young people who are hungry for a real opportunity to learn and become a multi-skilled Heating Engineer. All applicants come from a pre-apprenticeship trainee programme with a flavour for the building services sector.

It is with care, compassion and a patient approach that GEM is able to infuse high quality techniques, high-quality standards, and transfer a highly desired portfolio of technical skills to those who want to learn and excel in their career.

To demonstrate its passion and dedication to our education programmes, GEM has employed a qualified assessor to carry out the role of Apprentice Mentor and Resident Liaison Officer. This role is pivotal and instrumental in ensuring our trainee beneficiaries and apprentices excel in their training and education.
